Delay – Con rod pain !
Well, mid May has been and gone and the car is still engineless in the bodyshop. Back in mid April Simon at RPS had to break the bad news to us that the car would not be ready for the West Country tour. The primary reason was a delay in the engine rebuild, we want to fit modern shell bearings in place of the white metal bearings, but the original con rods do not have enough “meat” left on them to be machined out for the shell bearings. At this point we agreed to a rather hefty cost of making new con rods at £200 each, but four weeks would be required to make the new set of con rods. We decided to get the engine back in the car before finishing the spraying, so that the bodywork would not be damaged whilst refitting the engine and gearbox. This is a pain for Grove Body Repairs who are respraying the car, the car is clogging their workshop and I am sure they would be pleased to see leave. The car is very difficult to move as the chassis contracts when the engine is removed, this binds the brakes on !
