Euro Tour – 12/9/09 – London to Valenciennes 312km

Euro Tour – 12/9/09 – London to Valenciennes 312km Trip from London down to Dover was uneventful, the car feels much better on the road with the new Dunlop tyres, also seems to handle better with more weight on board. We had a slight concern with a slight cough/splutter on a long uphill section, which proved a prelude of things to come. Arrived in France at 1230, we then had a tough afternoon. After about 20km the car started to cough/splutter and backfire, particularly on uphill section with the engine under load. The idle speed had also started to race. Adv/Retard lever made no difference so it looked like it was carb/fuel. We limped on for a few km and then had to stop. Quick call to Chris in UK to confer on the “challenge” (Chris insists these things are challenges, not problems). We agree that we need to switch off main tank and see what happens using the aux tank. The aux tank was empty, to we coughed our way to a service station and put 50 litres into the aux tank – problem solved immediately, the car then ran well for the remaining 140km to Valenciennes in Northern France.
