Modern alternator now fitted – Benson arrived back from France on a transporter and was delivered direct to RPS where Simon and Andy have experimented with several different modern alternators to find the best fit for a 29 Buick. In the end we have opted for a small Japanese 40amp unit that is popular choice for modern rally cars. RPS fabricated a plate that sits above and forward of the old generator – the alternator is fixed to the plate. A new smaller pulley was fabricated to get around the crankshaft speed issue so the alternator spits out a bit of juice on tickover, but output soon jumps as the revs rise from tickover. The new size of fanbelt was a bit of a challenge to find ! We are all hoping that this alternator is the end of the charging problems and we can focus on doing some miles now.
