Day 20 Wed 29th Sept – Shymkent to Border Uzbekhistan to Tashkent 150 km
The standard of cuisine did not improve at breakfast which was a disappointment after the pleasant cold morning shower but hardly surprising considering it was leftovers from last nights dinner. Cold rice, pasta or soggy salad anyone?
Final 197kms of beautiful Kazak Tarmac to reach the border. It was a predictably slow and sweaty process crossing the border into Uzbekhistan.
Big problem for the participants whose cars have died but have purchased modern replacements so that they can at least carry on the adventure if not the rally proper. The cars were all pre-cleared with their numbers and despite these numbers being transferred to the replacement vehicles customs were having none of it and were very unwilling to let these Kazak registered cars into the country. Hopefully they can get this resolved.
Final 67kms on beautiful perfect wonderfully smooth amazing roads. Tim had to hold Benson back as he kept creeping up towards 93kmph which is a bit above the 80kmph that he runs best at. The engine temperature hasn’t been a problem at all even in the city getting to the hotel.
The Uzbeks are really friendly and enthusiastic – loads of waving and smiling. The hotel is much better than last night and as tomorrow is only a 350km run followed by a rest day they are feeling pretty chilled.
